Development Process

My goal for this year is to make 5 games by myself, with no team. This is my first project and I only worked on the game for 3 days out of the 7.

Things that went well:

  • I was able to plan out the quest system pretty succinctly and leave room for different types of quest requirements as well as quest completion types to be put in without hassle.
  • Was able to handle the UI fairly quickly.
  • Got the cinemachine up and running with less hassle, and able to put in camera shake at the last minute.
  • Much speedier implementation of the input system.
  • Completed the health system and handled collisions and game overs.

Things that could have been better:

  • I wasn't able to start work on the game earlier, and prioritized getting another project complete first. That was the right decision, but in the future I'll try to make my schedule clear for an entire week instead of trying to split my time futilely.
  •  I wrote up my GDD on day 2 and brainstormed on day 1. Going forward I'll try to do this 2 days ahead of the jam instead.

Things to work on the future:

  •  I was able to complete 75% of my list of base requirements, which is awesome. I think in the next portfolio jam, I'll work on the next 25% and hopefully some polish points in too.
  • There's definitely some additional requirements I should add to my list, like acceleration, deceleration, friction, etc.

Overall, I'm proud of the work I put in, especially as I tried to change up my usual processes when building out a game's structure.

Bonus:

My fun little brainstorming chart for the Quest system lol.
